Overwatch 2: The Most Iconic Abilities That Vanished Forever
Overwatch 2's hero abilities and game balance have evolved, with iconic powers like Hanzo's Scatter Arrow and Mercy's Mass Resurrect removed.
Hey everyone! It's 2026, and as I'm grinding through the latest Overwatch 2 season, I can't help but feel nostalgic for some of the wild abilities that have been completely erased from the game's history. Seriously, the evolution from the original Overwatch to now is insane. Blizzard has always been on a mission to balance the chaos, and sometimes that meant straight-up deleting iconic skills from heroes' kits. Let's take a trip down memory lane and talk about the abilities we lost, why they had to go, and how the game is fundamentally different without them.

Let's start with the legends, the stuff of nightmares and highlight reels. Two abilities stand above the rest in the hall of infamy: Hanzo's Scatter Arrow and Mercy's original Mass Resurrect Ultimate. Oh man, Scatter Arrow... 😂 Remember firing that into a room and just hoping? It would break into six projectiles and bounce around like a pinball of death. You didn't need to be a god-tier Hanzo to delete a tank from full health; you just needed to aim at their feet! It was so broken, but honestly, kinda fun in a chaotic way. Then there was Mercy's old Valkyrie. Pressing 'Q' and seeing your entire team rise from the dead around you was the ultimate power trip. It completely swung team fights and made Mercy a must-pick. Blizzard eventually downgraded it to a single-target ability, which is way more balanced, but nothing matched the sheer drama of that old ultimate.
Some heroes just couldn't catch a break and went through complete identity crises. Looking at you, Bastion, Symmetra, Orisa, and Torbjorn! Their kits were overhauled so many times.

Bastion was a total menace. His old kit in OW1 was a fortress:
-
Configuration: Sentry: The classic 'turret mode' that mowed down everything.
-
Self-Repair: A channeled heal that kept him alive forever.
-
Configuration: Tank (Ultimate): Transforming into a mini-tank with explosive rounds.
Coming into Overwatch 2, they scrapped almost all of it! Sentry mode got reworked, Self-Repair was removed for a passive, and the Tank ult is gone. He's much more mobile now, but I miss the pure, stationary chaos.

Symmetra holds the crown for Most Reworked Hero, no contest. Her original playstyle as a support-builder hybrid is totally gone. She used to hand out personal shields (Photon Shield) and later could drop a massive Shield Generator that gave her whole team extra health! Her first ultimate was a Teleporter from spawn. Can you imagine that in today's 5v5 meta? It would be wild. Now, her teleporter is just a regular cooldown with a short range. She's balanced now, but she's a completely different character.

Torbjorn's old Level 3 Turret during his Molten Core ultimate was absolutely terrifying. That thing would melt anyone in seconds. And his Armor Packs? Tossing little health boosts to your teammates felt so supportive for a defense hero. Both are gone, replaced by a more consistent but less meme-worthy kit.

The shift to Overwatch 2 and its 5v5 format demanded some of the biggest cuts. The game's philosophy moved away from overwhelming shield wars and static defenses.
Orisa's rework is the perfect example. In OW2, they removed her Protective Barrier entirely. Remember the days of double-shield meta with Orisa and Sigma? Yeah, Blizzard nuked that strategy by limiting teams to one tank and taking her barrier away. Her Halt ability (that graviton-like pull) and her Supercharger ultimate (a damage boost bongo drum!) were also scrapped. In their place, we got the javelin-spinning, javelin-throwing, Terra Surging brawler we know today. She's more fun to play now, but I do miss the strategic anchor she used to be.
Here’s a quick rundown of other major abilities that got vaulted:
| Hero | Removed Ability | Why It Was Problematic |
|---|---|---|
| Cassidy | Flashbang | Too reliable a stun in the CC-heavy OW1 era. Replaced with a grenade. |
| Doomfist | Rising Uppercut | Part of his one-shot combo. Removed when he was reworked into a tank. |
| Reaper | Soul Orbs | Dropped by dead enemies for healing. Promoted passive play, replaced with a passive life steal. |
| Orisa (OW1) | Halt! & Supercharger | Core parts of her old kit, replaced for a more aggressive OW2 design. |
Looking back from 2026, it's clear all these changes, as painful as some were, shaped the faster, more aggressive Overwatch 2 we play today. The removal of mass resurrection, scatter arrows, and endless shields forced the game to rely more on mechanical skill and coordinated dives rather than cheesy one-shot combos or defensive stalemates. The game feels fresher, but part of me will always miss the beautiful, broken chaos of the old days. What removed ability do you miss the most? Let me know in the comments! ✌️
